Chun Ya Bing Cha
Brand & Factory : Jin Xiang, Chun Ming Tea Factory | Type : Sheng/Raw | Vintage Year : 2005
(rating: 4.5 out of 5)
This Chun Ya tea cake is comprised mostly of lightly oxidized, unopened silvery Yunnan tea buds that were compressed into the shape of a round disc for easy storing and aging. Although technically a Raw Pu'er, it is not uncommon to see these tea cakes being classified as a Silver Needle or Yin Zhen (a popular White tea) tea cake due to the appearance of the tea buds. The liquor of its infusion is a reminiscence of Yunnan Gold tea, delightfully sweet with malty note. While most Raw Pu'er requires at least 4 to 5 years of aging for its mellow and sweet taste to develop, this Chun Ya tea cake is prime for drinking.

Re-ordered and tasted this against a couple of pricier silver-buds, including the well-regarded Fuhai. This is my pick of the bunch.

Initially, I ignored this sample. I thought it would be a gimmick, and one from a cheapie producer. Briefly tried a pot-brew out of curiosity, the result was dreary and I forgot about the little sample pack of silver-bud. Yesterday, emerging from the scrub in the stinking heat and with an empty stomach, I grabbed it impulsively and brewed it (properly). After about seven nectarous infusions I realised that I’d been drinking sheng for an hour on an empty stomach without ill effect. Try this pu with plenty of leaf, lowish temp for the sweetness, but slightly stewing the infusions to coax out some welcome sheng bitterness...you might be as surprised as I was.

As described this tea is indeed reminiscent of "Yunnan Gold" hong cha in aroma. The taste is more or less clean and the strength is on the weaker side for young Pu-erh as obvious from the genre, a bit bitter maybe. This tea really does feel like a white tea that has been compressed, but perhaps just a little more rounded and stronger, reminded me a bit of peaches. A nice tea, its a peculiar genre really but it’s not all that bad to drink now I think.

You can drastically change the experience of this tea with small adjustments in brewing parameters. Steep it 10 different ways, you’ll get 10 totally different teas, all of them good. Very different from all the other pu-erh teas I have tried, I really like this tea. I’ll be sure to buy more of this one.
